Obtaining your first job after you’ve finished school is a big deal. You’re more independent than ever, earning more, and excited about all of the changes that you’re experiencing.

With all of these changes, it can be easy to forget about maintaining an effective balance between work and your life outside of the office. However, it’s important to pay attention to how work and life are impacting you, as there are many negative effects of failing to maintain work-life balance.

Negatives effects may include forgetting about important family/friend relationships, health issues such as starting to smoke or gaining weight, poor reviews at work since you are tired and/or unmotivated, stress and more.

An effective work-life balance can help a person enjoy the life they live outside of work, as life is not all about your job.

Below are five tips to balance both work and life after you obtain your first job:


1. Leave Work at Work

In order to maintain a great work-life balance, you should think about leaving work at work. Realistically, you should be able to fit in all of your work responsibilities during your normal work hours without feeling like you can’t have a life outside of work.

This is key when it comes to maintaining work-life balance as many people bring work tasks home: they keep their work cell phone on, continually check their company e-mail and more, which can keep them from enjoying hobbies outside of the office – or from simply de-stressing after a long day.


2. Include Fun Events in Your Schedule

When most people create a to-do list or weekly schedule, they usually it with tasks that they don’t want to do. In order to have a better work-life balance, you should start scheduling downtime into your day or week. This can include time to eat dinner with your family, grab a lunch with friends, get a massage, go to the movies or just relax with a good book.

Including downtime into your schedule makes impact on your work-life balance, as it can be a great reminder of how you still need to fit fun into your week, no matter how busy you are.


3. Learn How to Say “No”

Tasks and errands can build up quickly and overwhelm you. If you have no time in your schedule, then you’ll need to start saying “no” when your coworkers ask you to do things. This is one of the only realistic ways that you can add time back into your life.


4. Be Time Efficient

For the best work-life balance, you must think about how you are using your time. If your days are packed full of activities and you feel like you can’t seem to catch a break, then every single minute you can find counts.

This means you might want to group tasks together to eliminate time that may be wasted in-between, look for ways that multi-tasking may help you save time or think about outsourcing household activities such as mowing the lawn or cleaning the house. So many people waste time throughout the day when things could have been done differently. 10 minutes here and there throughout the day might equal to a few hours or more each week that you could spend doing things that you enjoy.


5. Take a Vacation

So your first few months on your first job may not be the best time to take a vacation. However, when the time comes and you can take one, be sure to use all of the days that you are given before they expire. According to a recent survey, four in ten workers don’t take off all of their vacation days each year. Many, despite seeing the value in taking time off, are afraid that they will seem ungrateful for the job they have. That’s simply not true. In fact, workers who take time off are 6.5 percent more likely to get a bonus or promotion.

A vacation, even if it is just one where you stay at home, can be a great way to relax and unwind.
