Furthering your education is a tried-and-true method of growing your career, but do young people think it’s worth the price tag? According to GenFKD’s Millennial Money Survey, 88 percent of millennials are open to going back to school to get a better job.

The reality of our job market is that it’s increasingly competitive, and millennials are doing anything and everything they can to have an edge in today’s workforce. While sometimes that might mean hopping jobs to get ahead in one’s career, other times it means going back to school to get the skills one needs to obtain a better job.
Recruiters and employers alike have expressed their woes about millennials’ lack of preparation for the job hunt, and their lack of necessary skills within the workplace. It’s a painful blow for millennials to have to go back to school after already accumulating an obscene amount of student debt.
Then again, some lucrative fields with job opportunities require additional training so that more schooling can pay off. Is job retraining the answer that millennials need for success?

Graduate school is a popular example of retraining that’s frequently used by millennials after college. While some immediately head to graduate school to pursue their long-standing career plans, others head to graduate school after realizing what it’s like to go straight into the workforce after an undergraduate education.
Graduate school gives students specialized skills, making them more qualified for higher paying positions. It also provides their students with a higher level of job security, as they’ll be valued by their jobs for their heightened abilities.
Of course, additional schooling doesn’t come without a price. The choice to go to graduate school is one that requires careful thinking, as it necessitates a heavy investment in both money and time. It also requires a clear understanding of the path you want to take in your career, and as most millennials tend to not know what they want in general, it’s essential to figure that out first.

There are other options besides graduate school for retraining that are worth considering for struggling millennials. Trade schools and certificate programs are both prime opportunities for job retraining that allow for transitions into different fields. Plus, they’re both less costly and less time-consuming than graduate school.
For the millennials who find themselves in career ruts, there are plenty of options on the table for getting ahead. Weaving around the economy is no easy task, especially with this generation’s financial woes. Job retraining is a great way to get the skills you need to stand out in our country’s competitive job market, and for those who are financially struggling, it’s an option to consider.
Job retraining serves as a costly but promising option for those who find themselves looking to climb the ladder. Education doesn’t have to stop at the college level, as for many who may not be getting the skills they need in their undergraduate degrees, specialized education is a welcome career solution. In any case, you’re never too old to learn something new.
